Course Sequences and Syllabi
In the 2007-2008 academic year, with Cohort 1, the College of Education began an Early Childhood Teacher Education Program modeled, to some degree, on traditional programs found elsewhere in the country. The following year, the academic staff began to envision an entirely different model for the program. They presented their ideas to the Helios Foundation and, in 2010, at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year received funding to implement their vision, project CREATE. While Cohorts 1 and 2 were finishing their program, CREATE began a concurrent planning, implementation, and evaluation process based on the Funds of Knowledge work of Luis Moll and Norma Gonzalez. The implementation of CREATE's vision is evident in the sequencing of courses from Cohort 3 to Cohort 6. Not only have courses moved from university classrooms to early childhood learning centers, but they have evolved from a series of insular courses to ones that were cooperative and collaborative and, finally, to ones more fully integrated and connected.
